An extremely disturbing revelation has just come to the surface regarding the recent attack on Afghanistan. Apparently, Army General John Nicholson, the top U.S. commander in Afghanistan, did not communicate to Trump that the army was dropping the “Mother of All Bombs” (MOAB) on Afghanistan.
The bomb that was unleashed on Afghanistan is the largest non-nuclear bomb that has been used since World War II – and now it’s just been discovered that Trump was not consulted before the Army decided to use this kind of force. No wonder White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer ran away from reporters when he was asked about the Afghanistan attack!
In a statement to The Washington Examiner, a senior defense official said:
“From [General Nicholson’s] perspective, it was just another bomb. He didn’t ask permission. He didn’t have to. He had been looking at this target for months and decided it was time to mix things up.”
Deciding to use the MOAB just because “it was time to mix things up” is terrifying – especially without any higher permissions. Unfortunately, Nicholson can’t be solely blamed for making a decision like this. Trump, in his usual reckless fashion, has decided to remove himself from military discussions in yet another attempt to get out of actually performing his role as POTUS.
In all fairness, Trump is so careless, lazy, and incompetent that it’s entirely possible he would have just made the situation worse. Considering he is still riding the high from his attack on Syria, it’s probable that he would have been thrilled to give the final “ok” to unleashing the MOAB on ISIS. However, having the military ignoring the chain of command and acting on its own is a terrifying precedent to set, and goes against the protections set up in the U.S. Constitution. We can only hope that something like this will not happen again, but anything is possible in the Trump administration.
