For an egomaniac like Donald Trump, having people talk about him is basically a dream come true. Throughout his entire presidential campaign and post-election transition, the President-elect has been thriving off of the media attention, and it seems like he constantly creates new scandals and controversies just to keep the buzz going.
That’s why talk show host Oprah Winfrey’s recent response to a TMZ reporter asking her questions about Trump is so perfect. Oprah was signing autographs outside CBS studios in New York when the reporter tried to get her to comment on the President-elect several times, only to be shut down each time. When the reporter tried to ask Oprah what qualities Trump possessed that either made her feel hopeful or fearful, Oprah simply said that she was “smart enough” to know not to get involved in those type of loaded questions.
Oprah, who had endorsed Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton, clearly stated that she would not comment on anything Trump-related:
“I’m smart enough not to comment on that. I didn’t do 38,0000 interviews to get stuck with that one! No, no, no, no, no.”
The reporter continued to harass Oprah, but she stood firm. Making reference to the fact that Trump attacks everyone over Twitter if he doesn’t like what they have to say about him, she said:
“No, no, no, no, no, no. Not out here in the middle of signing autographs. I don’t want to be in the Twitterverse, honey. Keep me out of it.”
The last question Oprah was forced to shut down was whether or not she would be attending Trump’s inauguration in a few weeks. Oprah completely sidestepped the question and started speaking about her new film A Wrinkle in Time, in which she stars alongside actresses Mindy Kaling and Reese Witherspoon. She said:
“You know what I’m doing? When I leave here, I’m getting on a plane and I’m flying to start ‘[A] Wrinkle in Time,’ that amazing story.”
It was a brilliant way to sidestep a potentially controversial interview, and a perfectly good way to avoid giving Trump any more of the spotlight than he deserves. Trump and his narcissism thrive off attention (even if it’s negative), and Oprah made sure he didn’t get any of it. You can watch Oprah avoid talking about Trump below:
