What Texas Republicans Just Did To Women Who Miscarry Is What Horror Films Are Made Of

News, Women

Just when you thought Republicans couldn’t get any more horrific than they already are in their treatment of women and their legal reproductive choices, they go and one up themselves.

In the state of Texas, conservatives have just given a new form of punishment to not only women who have abortions, but also to women who miscarry. It is a punishment of emotional trauma and financial expense that serves no purpose other than to shame women and give anti-choice conservatives a sense of self-righteous pride that they are somehow morally better.

What are they doing? Well, there’s now a new law that will require funerals for all embryos, and it is set to go into effect December 19.

According to Salon:

“In early July shortly after the state lost in its efforts to make abortion pointlessly miserable and expensive, state health officials quietly proposed new rules requiring what amounts to funeral arrangements any time a woman loses or terminates a pregnancy outside of her home. Now the funerals-for-embryos rule will be in effect before the end of the year.”

The Texas Tribune reports:

“Texas’ proposed rules requiring the cremation or burial of fetal remains will take effect Dec. 19, according to state health officials.

Despite intense outcry from the medical community and reproductive rights advocates, the state will prohibit hospitals, abortion clinics and other health care facilities from disposing of fetal remains in sanitary landfills, instead allowing only cremation or burial of all remains — regardless of the period of gestation.”

This law will be challenged in court, but until then, this reads like a script from a bad horror film. This isn’t about landfills and such, it is about shaming women in to not getting abortions. And on top of it all, women who go through the heartbreaking ordeal of miscarriage will also need to comply to this horrific new law.

The war on women is alive and well, and we must continue to do all we can to stop it.
