In pop-culture, one fictional character that has always symbolized hope is Luke Skywalker from Star Wars. And now that the United States has elected their very own version of the vile Emperor Palpatine in Donald Trump, it’s good to hear from Skywalker on how he feels about it all. Well, at least the actor who portrays him, Mark Hamill, who is now hosting Pop Culture Quest.
When asked by The Daily Beast how he felt about the election results, he said:
“I’m in total denial. I’m glad I have [the show] to take my mind off what’s going on. Because if you look at what’s being assembled for our government it’s like, yikes. It’s a who’s-who of really despicable people.”
And it’s not far fetched to compare the evils of the ‘Galactic Empire’ to the regime that Trump is forming around him. Trump is filling major roles of his administration with white supremacists who care nothing about the betterment of society and only their own personal desires to declare themselves superior.
Yet, leave it to Hamill to bring us hope. He said:
“It’s tempting to say, ‘Well, I’m moving to Canada, I can’t stand it. But in other ways, it’s a challenge to stay and defend your country and do what you think is right and not retreat and hide under the covers. It’s not gonna be easy, that’s for sure.”
“It sounds corny, but the Star Wars films were incredibly optimistic films. They talked about doing good just because it helps others and being selfless and understanding your place in the universe. Beyond being entertaining, I hope that’s a message that kids still respond to. Because I still believe that. I still believe all those tenets of ‘treat others the way you want to be treated’ and so forth.”
Which will be part of how we defeat the Trump regime and make sure he doesn’t dissolve the century of progress we’ve made to reinstall archaic white privileged values that can only be described as repugnant.
Let’s follow Hamill’s lead and find hope in despair and fight for the values we cherish most to lead our nation into the future and away from the destruction Trump seems to want to impose. The Jedis never gave up and we will return from the dark side.
