Donald Trump insists that he can’t show us his taxes because he’s being audited, which simply isn’t true. He’s choosing not to show us his tax returns, and who knows why, really. Likely because it would absolutely destroy him.
During the most recent presidential debate the subject of Trump’s taxes was brought up yet again, and this time, Trump decided to blame Hillary Clinton for his lack of payment. You know, because of course. He also kept trying to reiterate that people like billionaire Warren Buffett also use the tax code to do the same thing Trump’s been doing.
Well, after hearing this, Buffett decided to release a statement regarding those hypothetical remarks made by Trump during the debate. In fact, one could say that Buffett trolled Trump so hard regarding this topic, you can actually taste the orange tears.
According to Bloomberg, Buffett said:
“I have been audited by the IRS multiple times and am currently being audited,” Buffett said in a statement Monday, reporting adjusted gross income of $11.6 million on his 2015 return and deductions of $5.5 million. “I have no problem in releasing my tax information while under audit. Neither would Mr. Trump –- at least he would have no legal problem.”
Buffett also said in regards to Trump bringing him up at the most recent presidential debate:
“He has not seen my income tax returns. But I am happy to give him the facts. I have paid federal income tax every year since 1944, when I was 13. (Though, being a slow starter, I owed only $7 in tax that year.) I have copies of all 72 of my returns and none uses a carryforward.”
“As a former IRS commissioner and practicing tax lawyer, I understand it may be inconvenient for Trump to release his tax returns but we all know — and the IRS has confirmed — that nothing prevents any of us from releasing our tax returns any time we want.”
To put it simply, Trump is lying to us. There is something that he is trying to prevent us from seeing. Something that is probably utterly damning to his campaign. If that’s not true, then why not release them?
The American people deserve to see the financial records of the person who insists they can run the country better than anyone ever has. If he can’t provide proof that he’s not shady in his own life, how can we trust him with the nation?
Simple. We can’t.
Thank you, Warren Buffett, for being so bold to hold Trump to task. You are just the person to do it.
