Planned Parenthood has just found the perfect way to troll Donald Trump and the GOP. On Friday, the women’s health organization announced that it will give more people the power to vote by providing registration at its clinics as well as campuses and online “regardless of their background, beliefs, or political ideology.”
This is pretty much every Republican’s worst nightmare – giving minorities and women the power to vote (probably against them). Planned Parenthood’s voter registration campaign is called “My Vote, My Voice” and will involve volunteers across 45 states to setting up “action tables” outside of the organization’s health clinics to help people sign up, educate them on voting rights and then remind them to vote two weeks before the election.
This would give disenfranchised voters who have been neglected by the GOP the power to be involved in the political process – exactly what Trump and his minions don’t want. Out of the 2.5 million people that Planned Parenthood serves within a year, most of them are young, low-income and minorities – people that the GOP has often tried to suppress with insane voter laws and policies that would hurt them. Planned Parenthood spokeswoman Anna Keene said:
“If we can’t all participate in our government, we all get cheated. We’re launching the ‘My Vote, My Voice’ campaign to help ensure that every voice is heard and every vote is counted in communities across the country. No matter what your political beliefs are, if you don’t or can’t vote, then you can’t elect officials who will keep your best interests in mind.”
Planned Parenthood’s new initiative is going to benefit the Democratic party and its nominee, Hillary Clinton, tremendously. Although minorities tend to lean left already when it comes to voting, this is particularly true for people who rely on Planned Parenthood for its affordable healthcare and family planning services.
The campaign is launched in conjunction to the 51st anniversary of the Voting Rights Act, which aimed to protect African Americans from any barriers that might make it more difficult for them to vote:
Over the last several hours, Planned Parenthood has taken to blasting the GOP and reminding people how important it is to vote.
Erin Carhart, the Planned Parenthood manager of youth organizing, said this campaign is meant to give those who have been targeted by the GOP the power to participate in this election, as it counts now more than it ever has:
“Our purpose is to engage historically disenfranchised communities. Our hope is to encourage folks to participate in democracy.”
